{"id":115,"date":"2010-08-31T16:17:07","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T20:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.timramich.com\/?p=115"},"modified":"2013-04-23T15:12:49","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T19:12:49","slug":"segl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.timramich.com\/?p=115","title":{"rendered":".segl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am getting sick of CDs. \u00a0They sound like crap and have always sounded like crap. \u00a0They are fine for rap and any music that uses fake computer instruments, but I listen to classic rock. \u00a0Vinyl sounds better to me, and I don't care if they have less dynamic range. \u00a0It is analog directly from a high resolution studio source. \u00a0CDs also sound like crap because studios are making every sound the loudest that can possibly be, compressing the dynamic range to far below the theoretical dynamic range of vinyl, anyway. \u00a0My solution: my own standard, using DVD media as storage. \u00a0Studios would have to pass tests for that album to release it under this standard. \u00a0If they don't follow the rules and just slap a name on it, they will get bombed! \u00a0Metallica's last album, Death Magnetic, is a very loud album. \u00a0The CD is horrible, and the vinyl appears to be mastered from the CD, with just a tad bit less loudness. \u00a0The producer, Rick Rubin, gawks at criticisms about this and basically says that what he did was awesome and the loudness coincides with the type of music it is, and that only a minority complained about it. \u00a0Well this may be acceptable for the CD, but to release a vinyl that sounds like crap, and for people to pay over $100 for that, this is unacceptable. \u00a0That moron should be shot, but instead he was awarded a Grammy for \"Producer of the Year.\"<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<p>The details:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Name: .segl (pronounced \"dot seagull\")<\/li>\r\n<li>Format: 24 bit \/ 192 khz PCM stereo<\/li>\r\n<li>Medium: DVD9, About 2h:03m of room<\/li>\r\n<li>NO DRC or LOUDNESS WAR: This is the most important. \u00a0Good mastering is what makes music sound good. \u00a0Music with crazy DRC and complete loudness sounds like crap.<\/li>\r\n<li>The loudest point on the whole album shall be -3 dB from peak.<\/li>\r\n<li>Players should buffer ahead for layer change of DVD.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>An even better format would be the same thing, but on a flash memory device of 8 GB. \u00a0Who gives a crap about copy protection?
